3.0 out of 5 stars It fascinated Burroughs, 26 Nov 2008

(REAL NAME)
William Burroughs said "To my mind, only one science fiction book in hundreds manages to convince the reader that it could have happened anywhere. Charmas has created a future that is at once believable and fascinating" according to the publisher...
"Walk to the End of the World" and it's sequel "Motherlines" are considered feminist fantasy classics. Set in a post apocalyptic landscape the gender divide is a defining factor in "Walk to the End of the World" where men have enslaved all women. There is an underlying tension throughout the story where you anticipate that the women will rebel which helps to maintain the pace and despite the futuristic setting and implications of magic it has a dark and gritty realism that is particularly refreshing.
Initially I felt a little baffled by the number of characters introduced from the beginning but soon was brought into a complex and rewarding story. However I was pretty disappointed that the story didn't really seem to go anywhere after the scene was set and read the sequel only to find that focused on the beastial activities of some women who were not enslaved. This second book, "Motherlines", was much more of the kind of thing I would imagine a feminist fantasy fan reading and though it was actually a rather fun change from my usual reading it was not a patch on this book.
I think what I am getting at is "Walk to the End of the World" is a good read for any sf or fantasy fan but you will probably find yourself feeling a bit abandoned at the end unless you find another book where this one trails off. If you find it let me know!
