Product Description

Product Description
First Prize Winner - Basic and Clinical Sciences
2002 BMA Medical Book Awards

A clearly written, highly illustrated textbook of neuroanatomy which tackles the subject from the clinical perspective, emphasising what needs to be known in order to make good clinical decisions and reinforcing this message through clinical boxes, which appear throughout the text. Some neuroscience background is also included and the design is modern and attractive to appeal to even the most reluctant of students faced with the sometimes daunting task of learning neuroanatomy! An already well-established text, this new edition has had a major overhaul - it has been totally rewritten and all the artwork is new and now in full-colour throughout.

About the Author
Turlough FitzGerald is Emeritus Professor of Anatomy at the National
University of Ireland in Galway. He was previously Associate Professor of
Anatomy at the University of Washington medical school in Seattle and at St.
Louis University medical school in Missouri. He was also Lecturer in Anatomy at St Thomas's Hospital medical school in London and at NUI medical school in Cork, Ireland.

He spent 17 years on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Anatomy.
Membership of ASME (Association for Study of Medical Education) fostered his
interest in undergraduate medical education. His main research interest has
been the innervation of muscle and skin. For relaxation, he busies himself in
his one-acre garden, where he holds Open Days for charity each July.

Jean Folan-Curran is Turlough's successor to the Anatomy chair at NUI
Galway. Prior to taking the Chair, Jean worked at the Karolinska Institutet
in Stockholm, at the University of Heidelberg medical school and at the
University of Oregon medical school. Her research interests are the autonomic
nervous system and visceral afferents. Her favourite outdoor activity for many
years has been athletics, including competing in triathlons. Jean was the
first Irish woman to run an official marathon!

4.0 out of 5 stars A well structured, understandable and clearly illustrated te, 9 May 2002
By A Customer
The book is well presented, understandable and clearly illustrated, a would-be must for any new undergraduate student of Medicine or Neuroscience, and a handy reference point for those studying degree Neuropsychology/Neurophysiology irrespective of background. The book itself not only serves to describe the neuroanatomy of the brain flawlessly, but also considers the physiological make-up of the brain, from its basis at birth, to the potentiation of nerve impulses through neurons, and even the innervation of muscles and joints. Once the reader has gained an appreciable understanding of such matters, the later chapters are dedicated to the detailed reference of brain anatomy and the understanding of key brain structures. The clinical panels accompanying such chapters are a definite help in aiding the diagnosis of many brain related deficits, from facial nerve lesions to hemi-neglect, and would therefore make an extremely useful revision tool for any student, who as part of their course, requires an understanding of patients with neurological deficits. On the downside however the book has little scope for self-evaluation of learning, with no summary, evaluation or test type questions, and no suggestions for further reading if the reader desires more information. It also has few functional imaging photographs (e.g. MRI/PET scans), but the anatomical diagrams included, being clear and concise, more than make up for this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 21 Jun 2004

...whether it is for a neurology block, a neuroscience intercalated or just general interest, this book takes a very difficult subject and by using the latest diagrams and well written concise text, makes neuroanatomy a less daunting subject for medical students and scientists alike. You'll be hard pushed to find a better neuroanatomy core textbook.
