The first edition of this little book was written in 1970 with the purpose of explaining the heart and its diseases in a way that was readily understood by the student embarking on clinical medicine. Over the succeeding years, it has increasingly attracted a much wider audience, especially general practitioners and junior hospital staff, and has been extensively used as the cardiological text for those studying for higher examinations, such as the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians. It has also been popular with specialist cardiac nurses.
