I bought a copy of this little book in Foyles about twenty years ago as a gift for my wife, who had long admired Elizabeth Goudge's gentle, poetic writing. Since then, it's been part of our Christmas Eve family ritual, as at least one of us re-reads it on that day. It's a simple, yet beguiling tale of one Christmas in a small West Country coastal village that touches on themes of rememberance, charity, family and love, and beautifully captures the joyful atmosphere of longing expectancy with which Christmas is awaited. Written for children, its poetic grace holds something for every reader, and you may well find yourself returning to it time and again, as we do.

this was a nice little story. think this had been out of print and very difficult to get hold of. very grateful to get the chance to read it. had looked for it for years.
