Product Description

Review

Bernard d'Espagnat eschews the technical philosophical and mathematical jargon . . . while nonetheless getting deeply into the consistency and plausibility of significant metaphysical claims. For all collections on the philosophy of science. . . . Highly recommended.
(Choice )

In this valuable work, Bernard d'Espagnat brings his considerable expertise in contemporary physics to bear on the difficult philosophical issues arising from the current understanding of the subatomic domain.
(Thomas Oberdan Isis )

Review

This book is a monument to d'Espagnat's excellent work and style; it is surely the most complete book to have been written on this subject and one likely to last a long time, at least until we come to fully understand the remaining mysteries in the field.
(Roland Omnes, Professor Emeritus of Theoretical Physics, Universite de Paris-Sud )

ADMITTEDLY THE new world-view that soared in the early seventeenth century originated from Copernicus' discovery but it is not to be questioned that the change from Aristotelian to Galilean physics played an essential part in its development. Read the first page

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid at all costs, 16 Feb 2009
I consider myself to be reasonably intelligent and have a degree in theoretical physics. However, I found this book to be impenetrable. At best it is a poor translation and at worst it is deliberately obtuse making the intellectual entry level extremely high; too high for me. Sentences often have 4 or 5 levels of parenthesis making it just too exhausting and frustrating to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Important and highly impressive, 4 Sep 2009
This is not an easy read, and I sympathise with the previous reviewer. However, I cannot agree with this reviewer's overall judgement. The complexities of this text, which require concentration, savouring and sometimes re-reading, are due to the authors meticulousness in stating his case. And given that his case is of monumental significance to our world view, he is quite right to take this careful approach. There are some awkward points of translation, but these do not detract from the substance of the fundamental arguments. The clarity of thought and thoroughness presented by D'Espagnat is a virtue, not a failing, especially in this slippery world of quantum concepts, which our commonsense minds still struggle to grasp clearly.

Some basic knowledge of quantum mechanics is required, but not at a mathematical level. What is more useful, is patience. The reward is a greater level of certainty on the huge metaphysical implications of the scientific data that has emerged from modern physics in the last century.

It is a must read for anybody seriously interested in that subject.
