Product Description

Review

Mr. Dodson's enthusiasm--his passion and love--for his subject is catching. . . . he writes with humor and grace . . . . It's as readable as a good letter from a friend you want to hear from. . . . and what a magnificent story he tells.
(Stephen Goode The Washington Times )

[Dodson] brings considerable wit and charm to his argument and gives an excellent sense of the practice of paleontology, as well as of the personalities involved in it.
(Kirkus Reviews )

A fascinating and comprehensive scholarly and personal survey . . . The author has successfully re-created the horned dinosaur in a fascinating book of facts, theories, and speculation. With extensive notes and excellent illustrations, this impressive volume is highly recommended. . . .
(Library Journal )

[Dodson] manages to explain many of the intricacies of dinosaur studies in jargon-free language, and where jargon is necessary the terms are clearly defined. Above all he helps to make the dinosaurs come alive--something that most paleontologists can only dream about.
(Paul M. Barrett The Times Higher Education Supplement )

It is perhaps surprising that no general work has ever been published about [the Ceratopsia], but the deficit is now redressed by Dodson's engaging, witty, and erudite new book. It is a labor of love by an admitted Oceratophile' (his term), an anatomist particularly skilled in biometrics.... The prose is graceful and never overly serious, and the footnoted asides are informative and amusing, so that even chapters on topics as dry as the necessary skeletal anatomy and principles of classification will be palatable to the non-specialist.
(Kevin Padian Science )

In his new book, Peter Dodson, a long-time student of ceratopsians, presents a delightful and authoritative survey of the horned dinosaurs.... Dodson writes in an informal, often cheerfully and unabashedly personal manner. This narrative structure nicely conveys the sense of excitement associated with the discovery of and research on dinosaurs and makes the more technical matters accessible to the interested lay reader.
(Hans Sues American Paleontologist )

Review

Through humor and careful observation, Dodson relishes the opportunity to expose the reader to much of what he has experienced as a paleontologist and professor.
(Mark Goodwin, Museum of Paleontology, University of California, Berkeley )

5.0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive book on the horned dinosaurs so far., 5 May 1997
By A Customer
This wonderfully illustrated and detailed book has to be in every dinosaur expert's and every dinosaur enthusiast's library. It is not just an encyclopedic summary of every ceratopsian dinosaur genus and species discovered and described so far, but also a discussion on every aspect of their natural history. Dr. Peter Dodson, who is an expert on horned dinosaurs, writes on the discovery, biology and analysis of Triceratops and its kin, the Mesozoic strange beasts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting but heavily technical at times, 21 Jan 2006
By Nick Candoros (Athens - Greece) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In all Dinosaurs books for adults, the authors has to face the difficulty of keeping the balance between scientific thoroughness and text attractiveness for non specialists. Unfortunately in many cases, in order to better cement their case, they immerse themselves in elaborate labyrinths of heavily technical scientific jargon, losing the majority of their readers in the process.
Well, it would be unfair to Mr. Dodson to say that he lost me. His knowledge and veritable passion for his subject – the Ceratopsia – comes through in the text, which is well written, concise and in many instances downright charming. We get a thorough presentation of the series of discoveries and scientific studies, which created and sharpened the image we have for this truly fascinating dinosaur family. Each species’ anatomy is meticulously described and all scientific positions, regarding its phylogeny and ecology, presented and accessed. The two final chapters summarize current scientific knowledge and controversies, about the Ceratopsia family tree (employing the latest techniques of biological analysis) and the animals’ ecology in general.
Nevertheless, the reader should study hard and learn by heart Chapter Two, “Skin and Bones: The Anatomy of a Horned Dinosaur”. Then and only then has one the chance to follow both the detailed anatomical descriptions of the various specimens presented and, most importantly, how these data contributed in the paleontologists’ suppositions about the family’s evolutionary history. Otherwise one will be totally and hopelessly lost. There were passages which gave me extreme difficulty, even with the help of the excellent illustrations of the fossils analyzed. But I find this a small price to pay, for anyone interested to get a very good look at this really amazing bunch of flamboyant horned guys.
