4.0 out of 5 stars Elizabeth Rules, 14 Oct 2003

This review is from: Elizabeth I (Paperback)
MacCaffrey takes a refreshing look at Elizabeth. A number of biographies have tended to focus on Elizabeth the woman, picking out the genealogical and succession problems of a female ascending the throne - Elizabeth the woman versus Elizabeth the queen. This biography explores the political dimension - in an era before party politics it is simplistic to dismiss the 'political' nature of the struggle for the throne and for control of power. MacCaffrey offers a corrective to the dynastic / aristocratic power struggle by considering the practical nature of political intrigue.
