4.0 out of 5 stars Desinitely need to read the 'prequel' , 20 Aug 2006
i would highly recommend reading Sharp North (prequel) before reading this book, seeing as it fills in a lot of holes in the second book. Without reading the first book i wouldn't have been shocked at the plot at certain points in the book and neither would the ending of Blown Away have had such an impact on me, as i was left thinking about this book long after i had put it down. This shock and impac, and many othe remotions which come with this book, are rather important to understanding the complex and intricate, beautifully orchestrated story.

Blown Away has a fantastic plot but most of it is meaningless if Sharp North has not been read. Although i throrughly enjoyed this book and i would recommend it to all my friends. Patrick Cave has done what many authors cannot .. which is to create a whole new world with its own rules and regulations to which the plot sticks by and doesnt wander between our world as we know it and the imagined world of the author.

The ending of the book is very satifying even though i complained heartily at first, it takes time to mull over the complete journey in your mind and finally come to a satisfying conclusion. this is much more effective compared to other books in which the ending's either an annoying cliff hanger or a ending so perfect and complete, it ruins the journey you have just travelled in the book. Rather, Patrick Cave gets the balance just right.

I thought this was a really great back and a good wake up call to what is happening in the world around us. It had a great plot and although i din't really understand how the two plots that were runnign in parrellel linked together till the end it kept me guessing. I don't hink i would have enjoyed it as muchif i hadn't read the first one before hand.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better and better, 4 Aug 2006
I didn't really enjoy this book at first, mainly because I haven't read the prequel and didn't know the setting, if the characters were new, etc. Once I got into it - around page 40 - I got into it, and by the time I finished it, I liked it a lot. The characters take a while to get used to, but once I did, I didn't feel the need to read the prequel, which I think is about some of the characters who had a smaller role in 'Blown Away'. After reading the blurb of the first book, I decided not to bother reading it, but I will definitely read any further books in the series after this, or look out for the any of the author's other books.
