About the Author

Mary Botham Howitt was born in 1799 in Coleford, England. I've just read these books to my 8 year old son who absolutely loved them. They are just the right length and capture the imagination of any child reading them who enjoys this kind of genre. I noticed that a movie is due to be released next March - there is a trailer to view if you hunt for it. I've read Tolkein's 'Hobbit' to my son and these books remind him of that - a mystical intrigue in a world unseen!

The 3 children Mallory, Simon and Jared Grace move to a tumble down house belonging to an Aunt. They happen across a book entitled 'Arthur Spiderwick's field guide' in the loft. It gets them into all manner of difficulties with faeries, goblins, gnomes and elves.

Books certainly worth reading...box set the cheapest way to get them!

I was offered by a friend to read these enchanting books, and only wish they had been around when I was much younger. I'm not ashamed to say that I am 20 years old!
I don't think it's very fair to give these stories a bad review based purely on the fact that they are so short. In my opinion I found them just the right length. Yes I know they could easily be made into one book, but they are actually meant for very young readers. In fact, they remind me a lot of Beatrix Potter's books. Not only are they all beautifully illustrated, but they are small enough for a young child to hold them easily (which is why Potter's books were so small).
The story line itself is highly original and very imaginative - I truly envy DiTerlizzi and Black.

I've just read all five of these books to my son, and we both loved them. If you enjoyed Harry Potter these would be perfect for you. They are not as long as HP, which is a blessing if you have ever had to read all 6 Potter books out loud. My 8 year old has now started to read them all himself. A great read and wonderful illustrations too.
