5.0 out of 5 stars "A taut thriller", 16 Jul 2006
By Ben Sutcliffe (Berkshire, England, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sharp North (Paperback)
I'm sitting here, after finishing Sharp North by Patrick Cave with my head buzzing. Cave starts the the "blockbuster ... futuristic thriller" with the best opening line since Anthony Horowitz's Stormbreaker:
"When the doorbell rings at 3 o'clock in the morning it's never good news.". The line in Sharp North is:
"The girl nearly didn't find out who she was. What she was.".

This book is published by Simon and Schuster Children's Books. But don't let that deter you, this book is a marvellous read for every age. It will also make a brilliant present, as for some reason it seems not to have taken off quite like Harry Potter or the Alex Rider series. It seems that not many people have this much and rightly praised thriller.

Frankly, it's everyhting the Alex Rider series could have been.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling and Compelling , 18 April 2006

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sharp North (Paperback)
I've been very lucky with my reading recently - lots and lots of extremely good books - but this is a stand-out title. The book deals with broad brush issues - humanity, environmental disfunction, genetic modification - which other authors have examined, but does it in a very new way. It's also a very pacy thriller. The most impressive element of the writing is the way the book is subtly structure to keep you guessing without disengaging or frustrating. I was genuinely surprised by the finale - it really packed a powerful and totally unexpected punch that remained completely plausible. It's a challenging and exciting book for anyone. I loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Read, 4 Nov 2004
By A Customer
I loved everything about this epic of a book: it was dark, tense, atmospheric, thought-provoking and very intelligent. It simply was unputdownable and I couldn't do anything until I'd finished! I would recommend this book to absolutely everyone to read, enjoy and study.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Sadly would not recommend. Great premise explored in a dull way (sorry!). I didn't think that the style of writing was clear enough or enough was explained about the world. Read more
