Product Description

Product Description
'From the time Gilbert the Great White Shark was a tiny pup, Raymond the Remora stuck to him like glue...' Then one day, Gilbert wakes up to discover that Raymond has gone. Mrs Munch does everything she can to help her little shark come to terms with his loss and - slowly but surely - Gilbert learns to smile a wobbly smile through his sadness. He knows that Raymond will always be in his heart and, when mum takes Gilbert to the wreck, a chance meeting helps him find happiness once more. Jane Clarke's heart-warming story, exquisitely illustrated by Charles Fuge, is funny and sad in equal measure. It will touch anyone who has experienced the pain of losing a friend or the joy of making a new one.

About the Author
Jane is a regular contributor to poetry anthologies for children and is the author of numerous delightful picture books, including Smoky Dragons and Tusk Trouble. She spent many happy years in the Netherlands with her husband Martin, working as a library assistant at an International School. Now Jane, her two sons and her two Labradors are starting a new life in the UK, taking Martin with them in their hearts. Charles Fuge made his debut in children's publishing in 1989 with Bushvark's First Day Out, which won both the Macmillan Prize and the Mother Goose Award. Since then he has illustrated more than thirty picture books, including Sometimes I Like to Curl Up in a Ball, which was highly commended by the judges of the 2001 Kate Greenaway Medal. Charles is an accomplished bass guitarist and also takes a keen interest in wildlife and conservation issues. He lives in London.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated story of losing a friend and finding a new one, 4 Sep 2007

Gilbert is best friends with Raymond and then one day Raymond is gone and Gilbert sad. It's a simple story with friendly clear pictures which will strike a chord for many small children who lose a friend for one reason or another. There's a lot of wisdom in this book beyond the obvious "There are plenty more fish in the sea" and there's also nuggets of wry humour scattered throughout. I particularly like Gilbert and his Mum's trip to the Wreck for a treat although they don't usually eat junk food. At the end Gilbert makes a new friend, Rita, and although he'll never forget Raymond he's happy again. Perfect! If you like this, try The Lonely Wasp by Churchill and the same illustrator.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensitive and comforting book about losing your best friend, 2 Nov 2006
By Beverley Johnson (Tervuren, Belgium) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In this gentle book, Gilbert the Great White Shark loses his best friend, Raymond the Remora. Children will identify with Gilbert's pain and, if they have lost a best friend too, will find the story's happy ending helpful and encouraging. Although the story deals with a serious subject, there is wit and humour in both text and pictures. My son, Robin, particularly liked the jokes in the text, eg: "It's my fault Raymond's gone," Gilbert snapped as they passed an eel. "Last week I called him a sucker!" The illustrations are beautiful, complement the text well and have plenty of variety. Robin enjoyed looking for little details in the pictures. He describes the book as "excellent".

5.0 out of 5 stars Gilbert and Raymond the Remora are Best Friends, 30 Oct 2006
By alexa b (Kent, England) - See all my reviews
Gilbert the Great is a great book. When I first read it I loved it and I read it quite a lot. What I really liked about it was that when Gilbert lost Raymond he was sad but then at the end he found Dafinnie. There were good pictures and I could read it on my own so the writing was quite good. For a six year old I enjoyed reading Gilbert the Great because it was quite easy to read and they had good characters. It was a really fun story and there were lots of different characters with good names.

This is a sensitive and unsentimental look at loss. It is a simple story told easily and accessibly; the wonderful illustrations are coupled with perfectly pitched words. Read more
