The Runaway Rice Cake is a lovely story centred around the Chang family at Chinese New Year. They make a traditional rice cake (or nian gao in Mandrain), eaten during Chinese New Year. However, it comes to life and has its own adventures! The storyline is familiar to the traditonal folktale - The Gingerbread Man, and my son enjoys and identifies with it. More than the traditional folktale, it touches on sharing and compassion. I also liked it because there were little details in the story that are very familiar with the way the traditional festivity is celebrated in a Chinese family. Truly enjoyable for the Chinese New Year, especially for Chinese families overseas. Illustrations are detailed and beautiful. The only star not given is because the illustrations were in a lower tone of colour, thus not captivating enough for younger children. Still, a good book for keeps to take out every New Year!
