5.0 out of 5 stars Poetic and unforgettable, 26 Jul 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Habibi (Hardcover)
I read this book for a project in graduate school. I am glad I chose this book. Naomi Shihab Nye has written her usual fine caliber of literature with this novel. I have a twelve-year old daughter, and I believe this would be an excellent book for her or anyone to read. It is universal and timeless, as all great literature is. I especially liked the poetic sentences and thoughts that begin each chapter. I wrote down the ones I liked for my presentation in class. There are not enough young adult novels of this quality being produced; this one is a real find!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent YA novel/multicultural/girls, 1 Feb 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Habibi (Hardcover)
I read Habibi recently in hopes of finding a suitable multicultural piece for inclusion in an all girls high school curriculum. We were familiar with Nye's poetry "Making a Fist" from our lit. text.

Habibi does not disappoint. The main character is a budding writer and shows something of how a writer develops. The story is a fascinating blend of rich family life, world cultures, adolescence, current history and even religion--but still remains especially attractive to young readers. While it does not ignore some harsh realities of life, the book leaves one with a strong sense of the goodness of life and hope for the future. Nye's prose style is a joy to read retaining both clarity and poetic lyricism. Readers experience a special freshness of style and language.

We are hoping to learn soon that Habibi will be out in paper back so that we can include it in our curriculum. I am also anxious to read Nye's new nonfiction book as well. Thanks for the chance to respond.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astounding book., 8 Jun 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Habibi (Hardcover)
I read this book on vacation last year, and has inspired my own writing so much! The format, fluency, and clarity of this novel are all amazing. I, being a hopeless romantic and lover of childhood innocence, thouroghly (?) enjoyed this book. I would recommend it to anyone and am very excited to see it on middle school reading lists.
