5.0 out of 5 stars If ever there was a book you should read..., 6 May 2004
Amanda Davis' 'Wonder When You'll Miss Me' is one of those novels that is hard to put down, that you would love to continue for another 200 plus pages, that you can't stop thinking about. Faith is a girl you will love for her bravery, endurance, and vigor. The story told is not a happy one and still, how Davis tells this sad story is of such great mastery that it will enthrall you nonetheless. The way emotions and events are captured is so to the point that the whole book feels natural, as if it has always been there. I sure wish Davis could have been alive for another sixty years to fill more and more pages with her great prose and dazzling writing. We will have to do with rereading this book ever after... Which is a pleasure all the same.

4.0 out of 5 stars Deliciously disturbing, 30 Sep 2009
This is a strange but addictive book by Amanda Davis. It's very dark; about an overweight fifteen year old girl called who drops all the weight after being assaulted by a group of boys. She begins seeing seeing a strange version of herself she calls only 'the fat girl' who follows her around and is constantly stuffing her face with food. She ends up attempting suicide and being commited to an asylum for some months. Now, I love dark books- I gobble them up... but I ended up feeling this one was perhaps a little too much for me. I was actually quite depressed by the end of it, and I don't usually get that way even with the darkest of books. I think it was the hopelessness that pervaded the book that got to me- something I can't quite explain- perhaps the idea that we only live because we're afraid of death.

After the main character Faith gets out of the asylum she takes revenge on the boy who humiliated her and flees to the circus to find a friend. Though the book starts slowly, I found this part fascinating. I loved the harsh honest depictions of the circus people, and how Faith slowly starts creating a new life, a new person (she even changes her name to 'Annabel'). Even though the book depressed me, I did enjoy it... in a kind of self-destructive kind of way. I might not read it again for a while. The only things I didn't think worked was two wannabe-swingers who tried to follow Faith with a peculiar intensity- and I think the 'fat girl' was perhaps overdone. She constantly stuffing herself with food everytime she appears- it gets repetitive. Also, it felt to me as though the book was being a bit too overbearing with the, "hey look, I'm an allegory!" kind of styling.

I do recommend this one however.
