4.0 out of 5 stars A helpful way to introduce a youngster to your new arrival, 20 Oct 1998
By A Customer
I bought a copy of this book for a friend who was expecting her second child and it proved a great buy! It tackles the difficult issue of explaining to the older child how different life will be with a new baby. The book is very child-centred, pointing out that the baby can't do much at first but stressing how the big brother can get involved from the start. It also highlights all the things the big one can do that the little one can't! The gender of the baby isn't mentioned, so it can easily be read before the new baby arrives.

The best page for me is the one near the end which says: "Mummy loves me. Daddy loves me. I'm the only ME in the whole world!" which neatly explains that no matter how many children you have, each is special for themselves.

The only problems for the UK market are some Americanisms - "Mommy" and "diaper", but I just say "Mummy" and "nappy" - it's a good thing pre-schoolers can't read! Also, and this bothered me as a former breastfeeding mum, the baby is shown being bottlefed by the big brother, which would need to be carefully explained. I wish more books would show mums breastfeeding! Despite these difficulties, it's a lovely book - and apparently there's another edition, using the same text, called "I'm a Big Sister".

I liked it so much I bought another copy for my son, even though I wasn't pregnant, but ended up passing it on to yet another friend who was expecting her second. It became her 21-month old's favourite book. Hopefully I'll be putting an order through for another copy soon .... for myself!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great help, 4 Jan 2006

I came across this book in a pregnancy magazine when I was expecting my 2nd child and bought it. My son loved the pictures and it was a great way to explain what would happen when his little brother was born. Although I do wish it had shown the baby being breast fed! My 1st son didn't have any problems with jealousy and I'm sure I owe some of that to this book!

3.0 out of 5 stars 7/10 on the whole ok but disappointed that bottle-fed baby
Was very disappointed this book only showed bottle feeding. I would have been more happy to have seen bottle feeding by Dad if it also showed breastfeeding by mum. Read more
