4.0 out of 5 stars Overall good, 29 Mar 1999
By A Customer
The first couple of chapters of this book are truly breathtaking, especially if you are a child of narcissists and didn't yet know that the particular type of abuse you suffered had a name. A friend of mine recommended this book to me a year ago, with the promise that it would "change my life." It has not disappointed. However, I felt the book rattled on a bit and got too autobiographical towards the end. In fact, there was something almost--dare I say--narcissistic about how often the author would remind the reader of how important it was to her personally to be writing this book. An immensely helpful book, but readers would be better advised to use the book as a complement to therapy, rather than a substitute for it.

After reading "The narcissistic family", this book followed on and gave more examples that I found useful. The many case studies and personal examples resonated with me and my own upbringing and provided me with more insights into the traits of personality adopted by growing up in a narcissistic family.

Well worth reading if you are on the path of self discovery and if you resonate with the descriptions given of the child of a narcissist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tells it like it is and like it was., 14 Aug 1999
By A Customer
After many painful years in therapy, I am free from the devastating effects of being the child of a narcissistic mother. This book is full of the truths which can be so difficult to explain to others. I didn't love it totally, but there is so much truth and insight, it deserves a reading.
