1.0 out of 5 stars a) American + b) Badly-illustrated, 18 Jul 2005
By Aleksey Mavrin (The Netherlands) - See all my reviews
I have just got this book. Didn't read it yet,- trust it is well-written.

However, some HUGE issues:
a) America-oriented. When giving the plant habitat, none of European countries are mentioned. I believe it goes about a lot of plants that only grow in America.

b) Paper. On the back of the book it says : "printed on recycled paper". No doubts it is true. It was ages ago since I saw the book printed on such bad (light, poriferous, gray in colour) paper. You cannot take it out with you, as the moist or rain drops can easily destroy the book.

c) Illustrations. For some (like me) the most important part of the book. There are NO photographs over there (can you believe?), only low- to middle-quality (black-and-white!) pencil sketches. Looks like they were printed in "econo mode",- many are extremely bad.

OVERAL IMPRESSION : very nice work, very badly prepared. Think twice before buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the top 10 herb books in print., 29 Jun 1999
By A Customer
As a professional herbalist and herbal teacher I have over two hundred herbals and field guides at my disposal. Steve "Wildman" Brill leads the field in combining an herbal and edible plant field guide, which is readable, comprehensive, and most important ACCURATE. His final chapter of recipes will make most readers want to head into the backcountry just to find the proper edibles. I cannot recommend this book highly enough for the beginner or the professional herbalist.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must-have!, 3 Sep 1999
By A Customer
I wouldn't give very many books five stars, but this one thoroughly deserves it. The line drawings are better than pictures for identifying plants (I have had better luck with them anyway). The book has humor, great info on what to do with the plant once you've identified it, and more thorough treatment of history and other uses of each plant.
