Its conciseness belies the considerable erudition that informs his text." -- RABBI HAROLD M. It is an outstanding book by a highly qualified authority." -- PROFESSOR HAIM SHAKED

JACK SCHECHTERJewish Theological Seminary of America"Here at last is a book of fundamental Jewish information, a veritable treasury of truly important concepts, that is consistently interesting, even delightful, reading ... written with wise, all-embracing intelligence, leavened with insight and wit." -RABBI IRVING

Synopsis

In 346 short chapters Rabbi Telushkin presents concise descriptions and analyses of the trends and concepts of Jewish history, religion and culture as well as intimate glimpses into the lives of great personalities who have had a profound impact upon the course of Jewish life throughout the ages. All the ethical concepts of Judaism, along with its beliefs and rituals are discussed; and each event in the life cycle of the Jews is described. Encyclopaedic in nature, it distils the vast body of Jewish scholarship into warm, readable segments.

I am not Jewish, but have a fascination with their culture, history and religion. This book is a virtual encyclopedia of information by topic which you can either read from cover-to-cover, or use as reference material. I HIGHLY recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!, 9 Nov 1998
By A Customer
My rabbi told me about this book and I refer to it often when friends ask me "why do Jews do ..." or "what is the significance of <jewish holiday>". Very easy to read, and very easy to find answers to things that many Jews and non-Jews may not know about Judiasm.
