I first read this book in 1988 when idling in the history library at King's College London. I had intended merely to flick through the work, attracted by it's lengthy full title and its apparent ambition of dealing with a vast subject in such a slim volume. Some hours later I put the book down having read it cover to cover.

Clare Gittings has converted what I presume to be a doctoral thesis into a stimulating work of great elegance. Her careful research and her ability to deal with the universal exeprience of death as it touched the great and the humble is very impressive. Illustrating the broad sweep of social trends with often touching examples of individuals and their families, she helps the reader to understand the modern horror of death and the strength once to be found in community responses to the loss of kin or neighbour.
