Tim Page spent most of the 1960s in Vietnam as a freelance photographer. His pictures helped to define our image of the war, until he was caught in an ambush and so badly wounded he was declared dead on arrival at hospital. Now he returns to a country opening itself up to Western tourists. Ostensibly he may be working on a travel article for Elle or trying to discover the fate of journalists who went missing in Cambodia, but in reality he is returning home. Vietnam today is constantly seen through the haze of that drug-infused, bullet-riddled war, but the two Vietnams seem to provide a curiously apt and ironic commentary upon each other. This is an idiosyncratic book, restlessly shifting between memory and experience, but the result is vivid and touching. Above all, Page has produced a sharp portrait of the land that shaped him.
