Product Description

Review
Milton R. Shils"The Philadelphia Inquirer"May I suggest that you quickly find this book in your favorite bookstore or library, sit in a comfortable chair and live through those final days and last hours of Earhart's fateful flight? Only then can you fully appreciate the remarkable research and writing of the Longs.

Product Description
A re-creation of the events inside the doomed Electra flown by Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan. The authors offer evidence that the plane just simply ran out of fuel short of their Howland destination, and Earhart and Noonan were not captured by Japanese soldiers or islanders. The book covers the flying conditions under which Earhart flew - in an era before radar, with unreliable communications, grass landing strips and poorly mapped islands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Earhart's disappearance logically explained, 28 Jan 2001
By A Customer
An absorbing account of the circumstances leading up to the loss without trace of Earhart and her navigator during the attempted 'World Flight' of 1937. The authors have assembled a great deal of information to support their view that the aircraft ditched in the Pacific somewhere to the west of the intended destination, Howland Island. They explain in detail the navigational techniques of the day, and describe the "human factors" which conspired to prevent Earhart successfully using her radio direction finding equipment during the final stage of the flight. A well written book which provides an insight to the excitement and pioneering spirit of the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!, 27 May 2003
This day-by-day account of Amelia Earhart's last flight is a riveting, edge-of-your-seat account of her famous attempt to be the first woman to circumnavigate the world by plane. I was hooked from the first chapter and became more and more tense as the end approached, and it didn't seem to make any difference that we all know how it ends! This account does include detailed descriptions of the complicated system of navigation and communications, so you do have to have some patience and interest in this subject to appreciate it. Nevertheless I found it to be a very inspiring, if tragic, story, and the authors' analysis of the reasons for Earhart's demise gave me a satisfying sense of closure to a tragedy which is otherwise extremely frustrating for having come so close to victory yet ended in chilling silence. The best book I have read in ages!

4.0 out of 5 stars A truly compelling read but not without flaws or bias, 15 May 2009
By Mr. A. J. Frost "adrianjfrost" (Sheffield, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Depending on why you choose to read this book it is most probably a 5 star read for many. As other reviews has stated it is so compelling and un-putdownable - I couldn't wait to get to the bus stop each morning or evening and continue reading. Despite knowing pretty much how it would all end

So why the 4 stars not 5? Well, while reading it there seemed to be inconsistencies and some occasionally questionable logic applied. Much is presented as fact (and it most certainly is a highly researched and detailed account) but for me the credibility wavered because of these flaws

I, and many others, would dearly love to know what really happened to Amelia (our youngest daughters name was inspired by her) - but if you want to explore that then you will need to read other books and information for balance. The Tighar research (and book) is another compelling information source that offers a different answers. The title here claims "The Mystery Solved" but it only offers one good answer without really being able to be definitive in solving a 70 year old tragedy that may, in truth, never be solved

As a gripping "true life" read it is excellent and it could well inspire you to go and learn more about this remarkable lady and her remarkable life

There are very few books that I've read where I 'feel' as if I'm 'there'. In this case I'm in the cockpit. Read more
