Product Description

Pharmaceutical companies make a positive contribution to the benefit of mankind, but at what cost? Are they buying people off? Are they selling drugs that have not been thouroughly tested? Do they actively hinder competition? This book attempts to answer these questions and more.

From the Author

If the tone of this is angry...
If the tone of this is angry, there's a very good reason why. "Big Pharma" has become one of the most politically influential industries on the planet, second only, perhaps, to transnational organized crime. The philosophy which underlines the business is simple --- if a drug cures the incurable but doesn't sell, it might be great science but it's lousy business. If a drug sells but doesn't cure much of anything, it's still good business! Unfortunately, the people who need great science the most, can't afford it. Witness the Aids epidemic in Africa and the 3000 children around the world who die EVERY DAY of malaria. They are deprived of essential medicines. This, therefore, is a book about how some otherwise good people do evil things. It is a book the pharmaceutical industry doesn't want you to read. It is a book I wrote because it is time to get angry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for GPs, not to mention patients!, 24 Jan 2002
Jeffrey Robinson joins the ranks of writers like Noam Chomsky, John Pilger and (more recently) Naomi Klein, in exhuming and making known facts which corporations and governments keep quiet, and the mainstream news media too often ignore. This book is a real eye-opener to the dirty world of the pharmaceutical industry and is well written and gripping. It loses value slightly(although given the difficulty of gathering the facts, this seems unavoidable) because of the amount of anecdotal evidence; taken from interviews with individuals whose testimonies would be difficult to substantiate. One impressive aspect of this book is that Robinson has listened to and presents both sides of the issues he describes, so that his conclusions seem fair. This book should be required reading for GPs, not to mention their patients.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Page Turner, 23 Mar 2001
By A Customer
It is rare that I have found a non-fiction book to be such a page turner. It is rarer, still, that any book has opened my eyes in such a way. The abuses and misdeeds that are documented are all the more terrifying because this is the industry in which we have all staked our health. Shame on the global pharmaceutical companies for behaving so appalingly. And bravo to the author for bringing all this to light.
