Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Jam packed full of glossy photography from the 1998 Formula One Season, David's Diary is an interesting glimpse of the day-to- day life of a driver of some of the fastest machines on earth. David Coulthard, perhaps the most unlucky competitor in 1998's Formula One battles, takes us through the ups and downs of his quest to win last year's Grand Prix world championship.

Coulthard gives his readers a privileged view of the machinations behind his controversial decision to allow team mate and eventual champion Mika Hakkinen overtake him on the final lap of the season's first race in Australia. His rivalry with Michael Schumacher is tracked as it develops in to animosity after a dramatic collision in Argentina and, as the season reached its climax, into near fisticuffs in Belgium. Coulthard takes the reader through the disappointments of a season in which he started as many people's favourite to take the ultimate crown and finished with only one race win and a series of crashes and mechanical failures to his credit.

The book ends on a philosophical note: "Maybe a diary with nothing in it but a long string of successes would be boring! I hope this one isn't and at the very least I can say that it is absolutely honest." --Chris Bunting

Synopsis

During the 1998 season, Coulthard was favourite to win the the World Drivers' Championship. This diary records details of thrilling wheel-to-wheel battles from the perspective of the cockpit of his West McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 car.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best F1 drivers has produced the best F1 book!, 25 Aug 1999
By A Customer
David Coulthard, the flying Scotsman, has managed to capture the magic of Formula 1 in this wonderful book written by himself and Gerald Donaldson. It shows the feelings and emotions that an F1 driver goes through during every F1 weekend and how they prepare both mentally and physically for each race.

With fascinating pictures from behind-the-scenes of this fantastic sport, the readers can gain an insight into what happens on and off the track.

This book is a must for the strongest David Coulthard fan and the F1 armchair supporter!

5.0 out of 5 stars A different view of Formula 1, 26 Mar 1999
By A Customer
At first glance, this book appears to pretty much what you would expect: an analysis of the situation before the start of the season, a description of the events in each race, and a summary at the end. What makes the book interesting, however, is David's thoughts and views, not only during each race, but inbetween races and at practice and qualifying sessions. At each point, the simple description of events serves only to provide context for these thoughts. When David suffers a setback, he analyses what happened, and what he felt at the time. If he was angry or upset, he says so. He adds, with the benefit of hindsight, what he now thinks of those events, not being afraid to admit if he has made a mistake. The result is a book that is not an account of an F1 season, but rather an insight into the mind of one of it's top drivers. And then it is big, with lots of colour pictures - it's presented very attractively. I've found that anyone, whether they are interested in Formula 1 or not, can pick up this book, turn to a random page, and instantly be interested in what they find.

4.0 out of 5 stars David'd Year in a Top F1 Team Pictured, 10 Feb 1999
By A Customer
David tells about his year in the McLaren F1 team together with the 1998 F1 World Champion Mika Hakkinen of Finland.

The pictures are the best part of the book, and there are plenty of them (I personally think Heidi, David's gilfried is a catch :-) ). David's text is interesting but provides little new information for a reader who follows F1 closely. For the uninitiated readers, a great book about the nuts and bolts of F1.
