Product Description

Synopsis

This is an account of neo-Darwinist theories, including the influential Selfish Gene theory - and the misunderstandings they provoke. Divided between "Dawkinsians" and "Gouldians", these theories are explained and evaluated, showing the profound impact they have had on beliefs and culture.

From the Author

Ways to enjoy or learn more about the book
This is two-track book, describing the triumphs of theoretical biology in the lat Sixties and early Seventies, which became famous as Selfish Gene theory; at the same time I look at the way these theories spread and changed in the popular imagination and how words like "selfish" came to have meanings that were completely incompatible with each other, depending on whether they were being used biologically or philosophically. So though it is to some extent a work of pop science, it is also a work of pop philosophy.
