Product Description

Product Description

From combing the Internet and routine filings with government agencies to employing complex chemical analyzes, competitive intelligence reveals where the market is going, who is leading it, and why. Japanese companies have had competitive intelligence divisions for years, but companies in the rest of the world are far behind in the critical business practice of assembling and converting peripheral data and matters of public record into a market advantage. This text provides a series of case studies which show companies how to establish competitive intelligence units, and how to protect themselves from similar effects by others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable to anyone getting started in the CI industry., 21 Mar 1999
By A Customer
I have recently used this book as one of the major sources for my final project at University in Bristol. I was conducting the project for a well known company so my findings and prototype were to be implemented in the real world. As my literature review involved serious reading around the subject I got to know CI in depth. 99% of the major headings within my review were found within this book, and I found myself referring to it continuously even with many other sources at my disposal.

2.0 out of 5 stars Long on anecdotes but short on substance, 30 Nov 1999
By A Customer
I think this book has some good sides and occasionally you can learn something relevant, but I think it is massively overhyped. You can expect that someone who writes about competitive intelligence advocates the subject, fair enough. But Larry Kahaner wants us to think that Competitive Intelligence is the only thing that counts in the whole wide world. Creativity? A strong research pipeline? Communication? Human Resources? Pah, get your competitive intelligence right and the money will just come pouring in (if you believe Larry Kahaner, that is) . But the real problem I have with this book is that practical advice is fairly limited (although existent), instead it takes you through an endless line of anecdotes which are about as relevant to your own business as penguins to a desert fox.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book about competitive intelligence, 13 Dec 1998
By A Customer
The discipline of competitive intelligence is new and confusing, but Kahaner makes it easy to understand. His real life examples are excellent and his writing is clear and crisp. After reading this book, our managers were able to institute some of his how-to ideas and it has saved us money. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand what competitive intelligence is all about.
