Living Architecture is a rare, spectacularly well produced, balanced book. It is a joy to read and possess. Living Architecture should be "required reading" for anyone interested in American history, urban planning, architecture or photography. Many architecture books are so dull as to be near impossible to read except for highly-motivated students and academics. The jargon and the footnotes usually get in the way of pleasure. Worse, many architecture books sacrifice "story" for photographs and quality printing and binding. Living Architecture, however, is perfectly balanced. It's writing is as excellent as its many incredibly-detailed color photographs. The skilled layout prevents text and photographs from competing with each other. Lots of people know lots of things. Only a few, however, know how to bring facts to life in an engaging way. O'Gorman brings rarely story-telling power to architectural history. Living Architecture is a rare book of uncompromised quality in an often barren and pretentious field.
