Product Description

Review
Elizabeth Fox-Genoveseauthor of "Feminism Is Not the Story of My Life" and "Feminism Without Illusions"A treasure trove of invaluable information, a delight to read, a marvel of thoughtful common sense, "Home Comforts" is all this and more. Recent changes in women's lives and expectations have tended to relegate keeping house to the realm of servant's work -- the epitome of what no self-respecting woman (or man) would choose to do. In this entrancing book, Cheryl Mendelson restores keeping house to its rightful place as the custodian of the peace, order, comfort, and sanity of our lives, simultaneously instructing us in how to do it well and in why doing it matters so much. And in so doing, she helps to restore dignity, value, and craft to the work that creates and sustains the private space that nourishes our humanity.

Synopsis
Ranging from suggestions for the care of musical instruments to maintaining home safety, a celebration of and guide to the finer points of home-keeping offers a contemporary, creative, and positive take on a traditional subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars Weighty tome with a positive message., 15 Sep 2000
By A Customer
This is an "everything you will ever need to know about anything to do with looking after your home" book! It says that by mentioning everything you will not forget what is important to you but if it's not important you can leave it out. Cheryl Mendelson had an Italian grandmother and an Anglo-American grandmother and she contrasts their different styles of home-making and their influence on her own style. A professional woman and a professor, she gives sensible arguments for valuing housework, and gives intelligent women reasons for viewing housework as another area of life to be professional about, if that's what they need it to be. She provides details of what jobs should be done and how often. I was particularly interested in her suggestion that one should dust/vacuum the bedrooms more often than the living rooms since, as we spend more of our time there it is beneficial for the family's health. I borrowed the book from the library, shared it with my best friend and we enjoyed it so much that I now want to buy it. It has helped me view housework and home-making in a more positive light.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful if you're looking for help, 23 Jul 2007

(REAL NAME)
If you're a person set in your ways, you're probably going to hate this book. You'll think that all the tips are unnecessary and that the authoress is slightly obsessive, but if you're a 20 something year old like me (I've been taking care of my own house since I was about 16/17) you'll find it interesting and useful, if you've never had any formal training off a parent or guardian.

The author has taken on advice from her maternal and paternal grandparents, and created her own way of cleaning. She's proof that you can still be a professional career woman, and keep house, without necessarily feeling guilty about taking pride in it.

I think we all are either impressed or put off by a Bree Van De Camp (or Hodge at this point) in the home, but I'm one of the people that are entranced by the allure of the house that gleams; from laundry to carpets.

It really is a book that covers everything, to the point of distraction, but you take or leave what you want. There is a charm about a book where the woman even goes as far as to run to her local government regulations regarding the washing advice on clothing... Only a solicitor!

I won't take everything on in it, but there is certainly a lot of good that has come from it. Worth it, and you can get it for a very reasonable price if you shop around. Enjoy!
