Product Description

Product Description

This text explores the relationship between a golfer's personality and his or her performance on the links. The author aims to show how increased self-awareness can work wonders on your golf score. Asserting that the golfer who is jittery on the tee is likely to be anxious in social situations, and that the "club thrower" probably throws tantrums in everyday life, he identifies six major golfing personality types - fearful, frustrated, manic-depressive, self-conscious, control freak, and lazy. Advice is provided for remedying both the psychological and physical stumbling blocks that characterize each type on the course. A "Mental Hazard Assessment Scale" is included. This should help readers easilt identify which hazards give them the most trouble.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kierkegaard, Zen, Overeater's Anonymous - of course! Golf!, 20 Sep 1997
By A Customer
"Golf's Mental Hazards",a new and definitive exploration of the game of golf, identifies six distinct personality profiles that are likely to create "hazards" to the golfer's game and offers practical advice on how they can be overcome. Through the use of Dr. Shapiro's MHAS (Mental Hazard Assessment Scale) the golfer builds his/her own Mental Hazard Profile and, thus, comes to understand his or her unique strengths and weaknessess in the game of golf and the game of life.

If that were the sum total of this small gem of a book, it would be sufficient, but the author draws from wildly eclectic sources, everything from Kierkegaard to Zen, from Arnold Palmer to Woody Allen, in postulating that all the hidden devils lurking on the fairway also rear their nasty heads in everyday life. Death anxiety, fear of fear, anger, the need to control, resistance to change - this book will show you how to overcome them, on the links or in your living room.

A book as fundamental in scope as life and death, "Golf's Mental Hazards" will be the classic the pros refer to for solid advice on the game, whether the game in question is the game of golf, or the game of life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Taming your personality, 18 May 1999
By A Customer
There are six hazards according the author. He provides a test for us at the beginning of the book. Then you can specify your own mental hazard--it's according to your own nature/character.

The author introduces a fictional person for each hazard. This is an awkward part of this book. Psychologists are not always a great story writers. It's a hazard in this book:-)

But the explanation of the mental hazards and how to overcome them are clear. I like autor's honest confession about his anger, disappointment etc.
