3.0 out of 5 stars I'm not in high school. I read literature., 24 May 1999
By A Customer
Books like A Farewell to Arms, Lord of the Flies, and Catcher in the Rye tend to attract a lot of the "this is the best book ever written it was a really good look at what society is really like and it was a great love story" type of reviews. So I thought I'd throw some variety in here.

AF2A is not a bad book. It is not the best novel of the 20th century. If you've already read Hemingway you'll know what to expect. I personally think this one was better than For Whom the Bell Tolls, but some readers will find the characters better developed in the latter work and enjoy it for that reason.

I liked AF2A for the minimalism that Hemingway employs. He says more with less, and after reading some of the lesser lights of the pomo era, it's refreshing. Not as a steady diet though: it would be like surviving on bran flakes after gorging on cheesecake.

I enjoy reading authors like Hemingway as a break from more demanding fare such as Gaddis. Hemingway is 11PM reading, that hour when your brain needs a rest but you don't feel like pulling out Elmore Leonard or Vonnegut. He's astute, undemanding, and I don't feel that I have wasted my time when I read him.

1.0 out of 5 stars The WORST book of all TIME!, 30 Jul 1999
By A Customer
I was actually looking forward to reading this but from page one I couldn't keep my eyes open. The characters had all the personality of wood chips! Infact, it would be more interesting to sit and watch the dog poop in my back yard petrify! I have never read such a boring book in all my life. It was EXTEREMLY hard to finish. It actually took me 1 month! And if I had to hear GOD'S name in vain one more time I would have burned the book, but it wasn't mine so UNFORTUNATLY I couldn't! Well, I'll will give it some credit..........the front cover is BEAUTIFUL.
