5.0 out of 5 stars Both a guide and an intro to the Rhone Wine Culture, 15 Oct 2002
By A Customer
There is no way to avoid discussing the controversy surrounding Robert Parker and if the truth were told, much of it is mis-directed. Yes Parker has incredible power and influence, but the reader is reminded that they are responsible for their own education and it is up to them to broaden their knowledge through using sources other than Robert Parker.
So, is the book worth buying? YES. There is little doubt that Parker is one of the most interesting wine writers around. This book not only provides a wealth of information on the region and their traditions, but Parker's profiles on the more prodigious producers allow the reader to feel that they get to know them a little more. His wonderful account of Laurent Feraud of Domaine Pegau in CDP is excellent and having met her, I can honestly say that he captures both her charm and ferocity.
Essentially when you read Parker you feel as though you get to know the region and the wines. Bordeaux is a more austere book as is the region.

Parker's reccomendations are not infallible, but then you would doubt the strength of your own opinion should you agree with everything he says. He introduced me to Pegau, St. Cosme, Rostaing, Chave, Pierre Usegglio and the finer (and cheaper) special cuvees from St. Joseph and Crozes Hermitage of the almost infallible Chapoutier and for that I am grateful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and slightly different from Parker's other books, 23 Jun 1999
By A Customer
There's all the detail and precision you expect from RP but this is more of an interesting read than his other books. More background and insight about the idiosyncracies of the wines and growers. I found myself reading this book rather than just using it as the essential reference that all his books have become. I felt that I got deeper into the region and its wines than I could with his other books, you could almost say it's a good read!

5.0 out of 5 stars WHAT A BOOK ! Impressive tastings, writings and insights!, 19 April 1999
By A Customer
As a French and especially a French born in a little town located at 20 kilometers from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, I am really amazed that Mr Parker get to know the wines of my own country so deeply. He really understands their 'spirits' and he is - as no one that I know of - able of explaining them and detailing them in beautiful, and in the mean time, trully informative and practical ways. This Rhone Valley's guide - because I consider this to be a real guide even though it is a shot from one author alone - is really pleasing to read and to use. It is motivating! This is a masterpiece to be highly considered by all wine lovers in the sense that the wines from the Rhone area were - and maybe still are - not very well considered by all wine drinkers. Because Mr Parker, as a well know master taster with a huge knowledge about the wines and wine producers of the Rhone Valley, did write this book, people might now get a better understanding of what these wines are, how they are made, and who is doing them best. Mr Parker loves powerfull wines... (so do I) ...I am not suprised that he wrote such a book about this region because the Wines of the Rhone Valley ARE VERY powerfull - but not all of them. This is what you will learn by reading this book. You will find plenty of details as well as plenty of very good addresses there. This book is definitely THE reference for now. Give it a try. It is worth it. And if you visit the Rhone Valley wine country, bring it along with you or you'll miss most of the fun: tasting the good, the excellent and the exceptionnal. A la votre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like him or hate him...
Parker is a superb taster. Unfortunately his honesty and/or tastes rub some people up the wrong way. I find his palette and tasting notes to be extremely reliable.
