4.0 out of 5 stars Subtle humour and an excellent plot , 3 May 2007
By A. Da Costa Maia "April May" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Metzger's Dog (Paperback)
Thomas Perry paints a very believable portrait of a lovable scoundrel taking on the great institutions. I found myself rooting for Chinese Gordon, the unlikely hero, and his beautiful lover Margaret. The novel is full of very subtle humour which sneaks up on you and makes you read passages out to other people who wish you would shut up and let them get on with watching the football. (Or is it just me?) An example of this is the bizarre title, which refers to Chinese Gordon's cat, Doctor Henry Metzger, and its voracious pet dog who is the terror of all except for Doctor Henry Metzger himself. Go figure.

There are weaknesses in the book, but these are forgettable. Overall, it is immensely enjoyable and very witty, and I have read it a number of times. A very solid crime and comedy.
