The White Mercedes a.k.a. the Butterfly Tattoo, is a really good book. It's a tragic love story about seventeen year-old Chris and Jenny, the girl he falls in love with at first sight. They have a brief, passionate relationship then end up being torn apart for ever. Think you've heard it all before eh? Wrong! This is a brilliantly written story. The thing that I love is the way that Chris and Jenny change each other and mature so much throughout the book. He starts off as innocent and gullible but ends up as hardened and mistrusting. She starts off as mistrusting of most men after her father's abuse of her, but ends up as sensetive, loving and... well, you'll have to read the book. All in all a very worthwhile read for hardcore Pullman fans or people who haven't read anything else by him. Granted, it's not one of Pullman's best, but that's not saying much.

This one of Pullman's finest earlier works.
