3.0 out of 5 stars Nearly the Hottest State, 15 Jan 2003
This review is from: The Hottest State (Paperback)
After reading Ethan Hawke`s wonderful second novel, Ash Wednesday, I did everything I could to find a copy of the actor/writers first book, The Hottest State. What I found was a quietly ambitious book that hints at the brillance Hawk realised with Ash Wednesday.

The Hottest State is set in New York, centering on the relationship between William, a struggiling actor and his troubled partner Sarah. Hawk guides the reader from the birth of the relationship, through Sarah`s uncertainty, to the final break down of the union.

The Hottest State is based around many of the themes and issues that Hawke would revisit in Ash Wednesday. Hawke addressers the topic of love and obsession, and how a relationship can be destroyed by the very thing it is founded on. He examins questions around masculinity, absent parents and the responsibilities that arise from casual sex. These themes are all interwoven in a tightly focused narrative that highlights Hawk`s honesty and skill with the written word.

The Hottest State is a fine work of fiction that forms a great introduction to Ash Wednesday.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book, 19 Nov 2001
This review is from: The Hottest State (Paperback)
This book is one of the best I have read for a long time. Very weired but easy reading. The only problem I had were all these American expressions I didn't know (being a native German speaker) but I really enjoyed reading it. It is about a relationship which isn't a real relationship. No clue what I'm talking about - read it and you will know.

3.0 out of 5 stars balanced, 3 Dec 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Hottest State (Paperback)
As there is a limited story line, the novel is thankfully (and cunningly) quite short. It only took me about a day to read it and I have to say that I was totally absorbed by each page. Ethan Hawke manages to make you viualise the events as though you are sitting in a movie with very basic but effective descriptions, and a refreshing tendency to create believable characters that aren't perfect. I was not utterly convinced with William's chracter, but Sarah was so subtley troubled that she made up for any lacking on his part by the writer. This wouldn't necessarily be a book for everyone however. It gives an almost realistic insight into the struggles of the first love teinted by obsession, but I think that aspect may be hard to apprecaite if that particular sentiment has never been felt by the reader. I thoroughly recommend this book, and just hope that Ethan Hawke attempts to develop his talents for writing aswell as the ones he possess for acting.
