5.0 out of 5 stars The open championship's greatest ever tragedy, and triumph!, 2 Jun 2001
By ianmarion@btinternet.com (dunfermline, scotland) - See all my reviews
I read this book following Curt sampson's excellent biography of Ben Hogan, and was not disapointed. There are numerous references to hogan throughout as you would expect given the coverage in the main of the dramatic 1999 open at carnoustie, when local hero paul lawrie prevailed in a three man play off to capture the greatest prize in golf, but that as you may know is only half the story. Sampson's insights into the championships main characters are detailed and full of genuine empathy, unlike some of the TV coverage at the time. the unstinting work ethic of links superintendent John Philp, his stoic defence of his course amidst unrivalled criticism and the tragic last hole performance of Jean van de velde are recounted, as are the adventures of lesser characters such as 16 year old amateur qualifier zane Scotland and journeyman american pro andrew magee. A poignant retelling of the tom morris tragedy from the last century leaves a lump in your throat as a caring father protects his son from the worst possible news. this book offers a real insight into the oldest, most famous major of them all and for golf fans everywhere is a must read.
