Veggie cookbooks fall into three classes: the ones which just convert ordinary food into veggie versions (using meat substitutes etc), the worthy but boring ones (lentil salads ad infinitum) and the wildly exotic (lemongrass and artichoke hearts). So it's refreshing to find a book that's realistic about time and ingredients, but produces really good food without meat.

I've made quite a few of the recipes, and for the most part they use pretty normal ingredients, but handle them in slightly unusual ways so that the results are fresh and interesting without being at all weird. Anna might suggest roasting tomatoes slowly before using them in a sauce, for instance; or cooking onions long and slow for an onion tart; or making a cold soup with peach, nectarine and yogurt as a starter for a summer lunch; or making a big pasta casserole with baked veggies and feta. She uses a lot of herbs and seasonings, imaginatively and well, but you will have nearly all of them in your kitchen already.

This is a very reliable cookbook, with clear instructions and with recipes for a wide range of meals and seasons. Most of all, the food is delicious and people really like it!

This is one of the best veggie cookbooks around now.
