4.0 out of 5 stars beautifully written, if a bit slow, 23 Jun 1999
By A Customer
Ann Beattie is an ideal short-story writer: she's excellent with description, or capturing the mood of a scene or the core of a personality, but she often doesn't know quite what to do when it comes to plot. Falling into Place would have been excellent in a shorter version, without the convoluted (and incongruous) plot "twists" that just don't seem to fit with her prose. This novel is a great showcase for Beattie's unfailing talent to convey emotion and mood.
