2.0 out of 5 stars Petulant elitism, 15 Jul 2004
By A Customer
I'm sorry, I have to disagree. Having read various biogs of Greta, Mercedes de Acosta, Dietrich and their milieu before I picked this one up with interest, but was unable to finish it.

Hugo Vickers is a biographer of Cecil Beaton, who has quite evidently re-used some of his earlier research for this book. No problem with that. But his over-identification with and admiration for Beaton skews his attitudes to all the other friends and lovers in Garbo's life.

He goes out of his way to deride and dismiss de Acosta and is particularly snide and dismissive about the Russian couple with whom Garbo has a long standing menage a trois - this is particularly annoying as it is a fascinating arrangement but we discover little about it because Vickers treats the characters involved simply as rivals to his handsome ex-Etonian idol.

Despite some promising tidbits of gossip the overall effect is tedious and petty, which is a shame.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful insight into the heart of a magical actress..., 4 Sep 2003

It takes a lot for me to read a book like this - ever since "Violet to Vita" I have simply avoided the romantic correspondence genre in order to preserve my happiness and sanity! Vickers really pulls off a great feat in this book. It's easy to read, incredibly detailed and reflects the passion Cecil felt for Garbo. Mercedes is also a curious woman to learn about. I feel sure that this book is a must have for anyone seriously interested in one of Hollywood's all time great actresses, from both a heterosexual or homosexual (or indeed bi-sexual) standpoint.
