Accurate. Dependable. Descriptive. Brilliant., 18 Oct 2000

This is the third Fodor's Bahamas I have used. You could take ALL of the other Bahamas guide books, extract the dross, mix together the best bits, and STILL come nowhere near the excellence of Fodor's guide. With Fodor's, restaurants are open when the guide says they are (and the restaurant still exists when you get there - not true of all guides, but true of Fodor's thanks to annual updates). Hotels are located where the guide says they are located, and are decorated as stated. Tourist attractions exist in the form described. In essence the guide is accurate - the prime requirement of any guide. There is a lot of good general information packed into the front yellow section, which you skip at your peril. However it is in the decriptions of places visited that the guide sets itself apart from the run-of-the-mill. It's obvious that every single place described has been visited, sometimes stayed in and enjoyed longer-term, by some lucky researcher. Just as soon as one chapter has your mind made up on your next destination, the following chapter changes it again. This is a guide book you can read by the fire on a long winter night. Match up the inn or hotel you are reading about to the colour map, and you can imagine that you are thousands of miles away. If you only take one guide book to the Bahamas, make sure it's this one.
