I've read all of John Irving's books and after loving the first ones I read, I felt he was getting a little stale. Then came Widow for One Year and while it had new ideas I felt it was his weakest novel by far. The Fourth Hand is John Irving back to his outstanding best though! He makes the underlying wierdness of the plot seems quite natural and the story just rolls on and on, carrying you with it.
