5.0 out of 5 stars An alternative to shareholder value, 10 Sep 2002
By L. van den Muyzenberg "Management Consultant" (Cannes France) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
An alternative to shareholder value

I have owned this book since 1960, started to read it many times and never finished because I found it too heavy. That is not much of a recommendation to start with. However now that I have read it I am sure I would have been a better leader and management consultant in the past had I read it. It is about as difficult to read as Das Capital from Karl Marx. However deciphering the book of Marx only leads to disappointments where as understanding this book opens up new ways of thinking about management, sorry, I mean leadership. Even though the book was written in 1938 the concepts are urgently needed now. Instead of focusing on shareholder value almost exclusively this book defines a business as a cooperative system where all groups in the system have to be satisfied. Leadership is about defining the proper purpose of a business, adapt the purpose to the opportunities and threats environment and creating and maintaining an esprit de corps at a high level. Only leaders that are capable of coping with moral dilemmas, and that are able to suppress their personal desires for immediate praise and material gratification are able to do so. Only when the employees have faith in the purpose of the organisation and the competence of the leadership will they and can act effectively and efficiently. The right purpose, effectiveness and efficiency produce shareholder value as an "automatic" output. Shareholders are rarely mentioned in this book other than as a source of finance and as a group in the cooperative system like many others that needs to be satisfied with corporate results. Chandler was the CEO of the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company and president of the Rockefeller Foundation. He is one of the few, perhaps the only Chief Executive, that has written a book about leading a company with the precision of a philosopher
