Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Bringing together hundreds of problems and solutions, PHP Developer's Cookbook is an excellent resource for any PHP developer. Both the authors are members of the PHP development team, and with a foreword from Rasmus Lerdorf, the creator of PHP, there is no doubting the book's authority. The introduction notes that some sections cover previously undocumented material, making it particularly valuable for advanced PHP programmers. It is based on PHP 4.

Each chapter follows the same basic format. A short problem, such as "you want to find the time that has elapsed between two dates", is followed by a solution, usually with example code. Next comes a discussion section, typically full of interesting comments and insights. There are generally 10 to 15 problems in a chapter, and there are 23 chapters, so a lot of material is covered.

The first and longest part of the book covers language techniques, from basic tips and hints through to illuminating chapters on session handling and Web automation. The second short part tackles databases, and then the third part mainly covers communications, including e-mail, directory queries and socket programming. There is also an interesting snippet about working with COM or Java objects. Part four is about generating images and parsing XML, while the final part shows how to extend PHP with the Zend API. Appendixes cover troubleshooting, online resources and PHP 4 migration issues. Overall, a recommended title for anyone who wants to get the best from this superb open-source server-side scripting language. --Tim Anderson --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

PHP Developer's Cookbook is a task-oriented book intended to offer solutions to the daily problems and goals the PHP developer faces.

In addition to a brief introduction to PHP, the main content of the book is presented in a problem and solution format, logically organized on a topic-by-topic basis. Each question specifies a goal, and the following text provides a detailed solution that achieves the stated goal along with any additional related information.

After a crash course in the basics, the PHP Developer's Cookbook covers more advanced development topics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent intermediate book, 3 Dec 2001
I found this book brilliant after I'd learnt the basics. The 'recipes' range from simple one-liners to lengthy templates for PHP apps (such as a file search engine), but for me it was the way each recipe is discussed that made this book such a hit.

The authors discussion on each recipe really lets the reader understand how the code should be used He also supplies alternative code that would do the same job but perhaps might be better used in one situation than another.

The extra discussion on each recipe also makes this book very readable, without having to complete the examples/recipes in order to learn anything (unlike some programming books which can be like trying to read a maths course book without doing the examples!).

I found the introduction to the PEAR classes particularly useful, although my one gripe is that some code exists in the book which uses a PEAR class which has never in fact been written (this came from the author himself)!

The author however is extremely prompt in replying to emails and extremely helpful with any questions you have regarding the book - this in itself I would find quite an incentive for buying the book.

In summary - buy it if you understand the basics and are looking for ready-rolled solutions to day-to-day PHP coding tasks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for all php programming levels, 6 Feb 2001
I picked up my copy in the post yesterday and I have not put it down. The Introduction was perfect . You will identify with it when you read it. I have a few PHP books, and they are all contain things which have been of help. This book has everything for the beginner to an expert programmer. I use my own style and techniques but I find the Authors way to be challenging and interesting. It is not always that authors connect with their readers, these guys do, and I am sure it will be an invaluable source along with that morning coffee. Great job it deserves five stars . No source code! well it's not a problem typing it in just enforces what you are reading. I am sure though the code for this will be available soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Examples, Well Written. Where's the source Code?, 31 Jan 2001
By A Customer
I generally liked this book as it was well written with good examples. I also liked the way it was split up - examining some key areas for example the file system, objects and classes and sessions. One thing that lets it down is there is no source code. So if you want to test any of the lengthy snippits of code you have to write out 3-4 pages yourself.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit thin on original ideas
A cookbook should do a lot more than just give examples of using standard features. Many of the "recipes" here are rather unimaginative. Read more
