5.0 out of 5 stars The best starting point for anyone who wants to learn c++, 19 Dec 2001
This book is the best structured book i've ever read. Each chapter build on the last, and the code examples actually work. The book covers nearly every aspect of the C++ language, except for file handling. I still refer to this book, even though I am now an accomplished programmer.

If you want to learn about classes, memory, pointer, references, linked list, templates etc... this is the book for you. In less than a month, I went from knowing nothing, to writing useful - real life programs.

5.0 out of 5 stars C++ Book For Beginners, 25 Jan 2003
By A Customer
If you are new to programming or have experience in another language and want to learn C++, this book could be of great help!

I have experience of programming in BASIC, a bit of ASSEMBLY, ASP, Cold Fusion and some PASCAL...but I had only dabbled in C++.

This book is extremely good for people wanting to learn C++ and teaches you the basics. It does start to get rather complicated when you start using pointers and references but read the chapter through again and it all becomes very clear. Just dont give up when you feel its getting too complicated.

I have already written 2 small console based games...Hangman and Os and Xs (with an AI computer player to play against) after reading this book!

Be warned though...this book does teach you the BASICS of C++ and you will need to get another book to take you further. There are a few things I wanted to know about that werent in the book, such as Graphics, Mouse Control, Reading and Writing from text files etc...but to be honest, this book has prepared me for learning more without it getting too confusing!

This book comes with a full free development environment so you can write and compile your programs and then distribute them freely....which is a BIG Plus! :)

Hope this has been of help to you in making your decision.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very complete learning package, 15 Aug 2002
By T. Hill (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book covers the subjects that professional coders OUGHT to know and frequently don't. It provides an essential grounding from which even the most ambitious will emerge well equipped.

Highlights of this book include:

- It is not patronising
- The learning curve was good for me as a fairly competant VB coder, but would clearly be great for a newbie too - it just may take a bit longer.
- The analysis of example code is dynamically written, so you don't feel like the author is 'repeating the lesson'.
- The flow from start to finish is very good. I completed this as a chapter-wise course, and this is probably best as there is a definite knowledge-snowball effect through the pages.
- After finishing, the book will act as an excellent reference tool.
- It should not be underestimated how important it is to learn basic principles of programming OUTSIDE of a particular platform.
- ...And plenty more which I haven't the time to list here!!!!

If you think you MIGHT benefit from this book, then I guarantee you that you WILL.
