Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

JavaScript has become the language no Web developer can do without, mainly because it runs in both Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. Sams Teach Yourself JavaScript in 24 Hours explains how to include JavaScript code in Web pages, in order to achieve effects such as rollover buttons, navigation menus, pop-up windows, animated graphics and simple forms. The material is presented in 24 short chapters, each of which concludes with a summary, a quiz and several exercises.

In its fundamentals JavaScript is similar to other programming languages, so early chapters teach essential concepts such as variables, functions, arrays, operators and loops. There is also good coverage of how to control a Web page by programming its DOM (Document Object Model) and responding to events such as button clicks and mouse movements. The author explains that there are incompatibilities between different browsers, and shows how to write code that works in all recent browsers, if necessary by detecting which one is in use. There is also a guide to troubleshooting and handling errors. The most advanced chapters require either Internet Explorer or Netscape 6.0, because of limitations in the DOM presented by Netscape Navigator 4.0. Towards the end, you learn how to create a complete poker game that runs in a browser.

This hands-on guide is ideal for those Web page authors who want to dip a toe into the world of Web scripting. --Tim Anderson

5.0 out of 5 stars This book shines a light in the darkness, 26 Mar 2004

If you find javascript confusing this is the book for you. It doesn't tap the full potential of javascript but that is not its purpose. This book is specifically designed to take a beginner and teach them the basics. This, in my opinion, it achieves very well.

Buy a more comprehensive work (such as the javascript bible) after you have worked your way through this book and you'll have all you need to get going with javascript.

If ever your forget something basic, you'll find the answer in this book.

To sum up, this book alone helped me to pass a javascript certification exam.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very quick and concise learning guide, 23 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This book has enabled me to learn basic and advanced features of javascript within a short space of time. On average, each chapter took less than an hour to complete.

The examples in the book are very helpful, because I can actually try them out myself, and this makes the read more interesting and stimulating. Also, they clarify and further my understanding of the topic.

I would recommend this book to people, who need to learn how to use javascript, but do not have the time to read through a detailed manual.

5.0 out of 5 stars You will be a JavaScript Expert in 24 Hours Time, 24 Aug 2006
I bought an earlier edition of this book and it literally changed my life. It kicked off the series of events that landed me in a full-time IT Development job, writing secure web sites for Financial Advisors to buy and sell funds and equities real-time.

This is the definitive book for learning JavaScript and this latest edition includes a chapter on AJAX - you might not know what that is yet, but you will... if you buy this book.

It's easy to follow, provides usable examples and the website that supports the book includes a support forum if you get stuck at any point.
