4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to PHP but....., 8 Feb 2001
By A Customer
As someone who has put off CGI programming as long as possible and has finally decided to go the Apache/PHP/mySQL route I enjoyed this book and it has opened my eyes to what I have been missing.

Two caveats tho' - firstly it doesn't appear to come with the CD mentioned in the publishers review. This means you'll need to collect all the bits to install Apache, PHP and mySQL yourself. I didn't find this trivial! You'll also need to type the program listings. Some people might consider this character-forming, I don't. I think the code for the last two chapters is on the publisher's website.

Secondly, there are a few typos in the code examples, which yes, are educational in their own right, but as you've probably already typed your own makes debugging twice as hard.

Still, highly recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars Some aspects good, 5 Sep 2001

A useful book, but 2 gripes: 1) As previously mentioned, the typo errors (which *really* shouldn't occur). 2) the chapert on object-oriented programming is poorly explained, and very confusing. With a concept such as OOP, it is the concepts that need explaining, not just the implementation of OOP in PHP.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book is very poor., 2 Jul 2001
By A Customer
I'm new to PHP and this book is proving to be more of a hinderence than a help. Topics aren't explained fully and the author continually introduces new terms and concepts without explaining them first, leaving the reader flicking back through the pages to see if there's one missing. Code snippets aren't fully explained and the sections on variables and functions seem to either have bits missing or they don't really make any sense at all. By the time I got to chapter 7 I decided to stop wasting my time and started reading PHP and MySQL Web Development by Luke Welling and Laura Thomson which is much more lucid.
