4.0 out of 5 stars Have to disagree, 31 Oct 2000

Although not the best around this book certainly does succeed as a good introduction to Javascript. I really think it deserves more than 1 star...

My only gripe with it is that the pages of tables of properties etc are so dry they get skipped, and then at the end of the chapter you think "H'uh?". The tables are a good reference but maybe could have been all stored together at the end as a reference appendix.

2.0 out of 5 stars Underwhelming, 3 April 2002
Although it's better than nothing, as a fairly experienced web author but a newcomer to JavaScript (and its arcane syntax) I don't find this all that useful - I still refer to it when I have a JavaScript problem, but reluctantly. To be fair, I think I needed a reference rather than a "learn to use JavaScript" book, but the book does claim to be of use to everybody from "HTML authors and developers" to "Power users". Endless lists of properties and methods without more than a one-line explanation aren't very valuable and could be delivered better online. The index is particularly weak. One specific example to illustrate the kind of problems I have with this book - a couple of Javascript techniques I really wanted to use were described as "a secure feature requiring signed scripts" but nowhere in the index (or anywhere in the book as far as I can tell) are these terms explained, and I still don't know what "secure features" and "signed scripts" are or how you go about using them. I've never really got the hang of the book's overall structure either, and the examples weren't terribly well chosen: they cover too many trivial "effects" and not enough real-life stuff, the examples have too much irrelevant code to wade through and don't focus on the technique being demonstrated. I've bought various chunky and expensive reference books to cover all the technical aspects of my job (ASP, HTML, VB etc.) - with my own money! - and this is one of the most expensive, and least favourite, of my purchases.

1.0 out of 5 stars not a very in-depth account, 28 Oct 2000
By a.carson@uku.co.uk (GLASGOW, Scotland) - See all my reviews
this book unleashes nothing! It scratches about from one little trick to another and provides no progressive, in-depth account of the language. Neither does it serve as a reference. Nothing here that could not be gotten, easily, for free, off the many javascript sites around.
