3.0 out of 5 stars Shows you how to open up Microsoft Access, 19 Dec 2002
By L. Stock "lstocky" (Suffolk, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is not for non-programmers. I doubt whether any of the 'SAMS 24 hrs' can help the beginner in the relevant field.

However, if you have come to a brick wall with Access and find yourself needing to handle the data in your tables say - to perform operations 'behind the scenes' this book shows you on paper how to go about the process.
You will have to apply knowledge of programming to making your code efficient and streamlined, the writer merely gives you the bones...so if you've never done programming before, forget it.

It's main asset is the explanation of using ADO technology to handle your database tables (and queries), knowledge of which opens up Access, and gives the database developer a breath of fresh air because now almost anything is accomplishable, particularly, behind the scenes and without interupting the user with lots of clumsy macros.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction, plus programming advice too, 10 May 2000
By A Customer
I have to be honest and declare a special interest here: I know and have worked with Paul Kimmel. Readers of this review may judge my objectivity in that light - in-depth personal knowledge or old boys network. I profess (and prefer) the former ;)

By trade I am not only a Technical Writer but also a VBA programmer with many years hands-on experience in both fields. I'm also a published author. I like to think that I know a good thing when I see one, and this book is definitely in that category.

Readers of this book will not only gain knowledge of VBA in ACCESS but also insights into better programming principles and practices. It is therefore a useful resource on two counts.

The style is informal, almost conversational (yes, I do remember the name of my second grade (= junior school) teacher - read the book!) and the sentences are short to medium length, rather than complex and convoluted (like mine!), paralleling the author's recommendation of breaking both problems and coded solutions down into smaller, more manageable chunks.

Each hourly section comes with a quiz, which is always a useful way to self-test (if you cheat, you really do only cheat yourself - but you'll still learn something), and answers are provided in an appendix.

In my professional opinion this is a must-have, not only for those wishing to teach themselves VBA/ACCESS but also for CS students looking for perspectives on what constitute better approaches to programming. If you're also new to the concept of Objects and Object-oriented programming (OOP) then this is as good a primer as I have seen.

1.0 out of 5 stars Clear as Mud!, 3 Mar 2001
By A Customer
The introduction to this book states that it 'offers practical solutions for the nonprogrammer'. I beg to differ - speaking as an absolute 'nonprogrammer' with no prior knowledge of programming whatsoever, I was pretty much stumped. After 3 frustrating hours trying to work out what the first two chapters had to do with creating a custom database I eventually had to move on to hour 19 (creating custom forms) before I remotely understood what was going on.

Not particularly clear for the beginner to programming at all. Examples are somewhat scant and the explanations vauge. The author assumes a prior knowledge of programming terminology. I still haven't worked out what 'Dim' stands for - me apparently!
