Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Rewritten for Java 2, Teach Yourself Java 2 Platform in 21 Days is an approachable guide to today's Java, including Web development. Any Java beginner should consider acquiring this tutorial, which does a good job of teaching you to program with Java.

When approaching Java for the first time, a programmer encounters an incredibly rich range of Java features and APIs that need to be mastered. (It's so rich, in fact, that the authors add a "bonus week" here, for a total of 28 lessons.) The book's strongest feature is its logical progression of lessons in the four-week tutorial format, which mentor the reader on all the basics while refraining from cataloguing every Java API and feature. An important--and effective--editorial choice includes coverage of Web development with applets using the older JDK 1.02 standard early on, while focusing on Java 2 for building standalone applications later. This choice makes for a logical progression in the book and aids in the discussion of more complicated API's for user interfaces (like Swing and JavaBeans) later in the text.

Lessons don't skimp on the fundamentals, such as installation of JDK and running your first applet and application. The emphasis is on short, digestible lessons on necessary Java concepts, classes and APIss (all told using the authors' humorous prose style). More advanced topics such as network programming with sockets, signing JAR files, RMI and JDBC round out the contents.

The Java 2 platform is extremely rich and sometimes overwhelming for new users. If you have three (or ideally four) weeks to spend, Teach Yourself Java 2 Platform in 21 Days can be the guide you've been waiting for when it comes to a comprehensible introductory book on today's hottest programming language. --Richard Dragan, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the beginner, 3 April 2001
By A Customer
As a programmer in non OO languages (RPG400 and Cobol) I found the book very useful as a reference book alongside a correspondence course I am doing in order to cross-train to Java. I also like the way the book is structured and for this reason have become a firm follower of the 'Learn .... in 21 days/hours' books

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Lighthearted and for the true Beginner!, 13 Sep 2000
By nellis10@hotmail.com (Belfast, Northern Ireland) - See all my reviews
I am working my way through this book as a complete beginner to programming not just Java. I find that the book explains seemingly complex issues in ways in which the beginner can understand...with a few lighthearted quips thrown in for good measure.

It makes you want to keep reading and keep learning which I find is the best compliment to an author.

I am also using another online text book which is also for complete beginners to programming and between the two I hope to become competent at writing Java programs and applets before I know it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Java course for anyone who know Nothing about Java, 17 May 2000
By A Customer
I feel that this book is written for Beginners who have NO knowledge & NO hands-on experience in Java at all.

with experience from my studies, I won't think it's very suitable for an Experienced or Professional Java Programmer who needs to buy other better books on Java.

Beginners need to read this book in order to learn to walk before they fly.

This book really helps Beginners to differentiate among different areas of programming in JAVA such as writing Java Applet, network programming in Java, Java OO programming or Java Swing.

It tries to make sure that a Beginner will be able to adjust to and understand the different ways of writing methods, classes, constructors as well as other OO techniques for the above different areas of programming in Java.

The flexibilities of Java & how they can be achieved must be understood clearly.

--A student who is learning Java in a UK university.

Nice, easy to read - maybe simple for an experianced OOP programmer, but certainly an excellent Entry level book for those without knowledge of C++ and the like!
