Amazon.co.uk Review
Thomas Fredell has written a winner with Teach Yourself Windows Scripting Host in 21 Days. This book tells you what you need to know in order to build valuable utilities with the Windows Script Host (WSH, formerly the Windows Scripting Host). He explains the WSH object model, how to write programs with it and how to run those programs. The material on VBScript and JScript won't teach you the languages, but they provide enough information to clarify structure, syntax and other basics for programmers who work with many languages at once.

The best parts of this book are the examples, written in an even mix of JScript and VBScript. Fredell provides explicit (and adaptable) programmes that show you how to use the WSH with Microsoft Office, Internet Information Server (IIS) and SQL Server, as well as for user administration tasks under Windows 98 and Windows NT 4.0. He goes into great depth on the relationship between the WSH and ActiveX Data Objects (ADO)--a powerful connection that is not possible to simulate with shell scripting. The inclusion of scripts that manipulate Active Directory file systems will wow Windows 2000 users (and those who plan to be). --David Wall

Topics covered:
Building utilities with Windows Script Host (WSH); VBScript and JScript; and using WSH with Office, Internet Information Server (IIS) and SQL Server.

Product Description

Learn to take maximum advantage of WSH to automate routine tasks, create powerful macros how to manage user in remote locations. 3.0 out of 5 stars Great for programmers - No good for beginners, 8 Nov 2000
By A Customer
This book should be renamed to "WSH in 21 days for programmers".

This book is aimed at existing programmers who are familliar with Object-Oriented Techniques, contolling programme flow and error handling techniques. It does nothing to introduce the WSH environment to people who are new to computers and programming which is a real shame as scripting would be a great place for them to start.

If you are a beginner to computers and would like to learn a bit about programming and cotnrolling Windows, then do not buy this book, it assumes too much knowledge on your part and you will only get lost and confused in the terminology.

On the other hand, if you are a programmer or have a lot of programming experience and are familiar with OO techniques, then this book will serve you well in introducing the WSH environment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait, 11 Aug 1999
By A Customer
It took them long enough to get this book out, but I have to admit as much as I wanted to slam them for taking so long, I'm really impressed with the end result! You can tell that they started with WSH 1.0 and then updated the content for WSH 2, but it's still full of terrific (and timely) advice. Lots of practical applications for WSH!

An excellent book to learn Windows Script Host on your own. I've found that most "Teach Yourself" books are either condesending, tedious or irrelevant. Read more
