4.0 out of 5 stars Explains all the hard bits well - Not for faint hearted, 24 Aug 2000
By A Customer
This is an advanced book. It explains some of the nasty hard to understand bits very well indeed. It assumes quite a lot of previous knowledge though. Mr. Calvert is obviously a comitted OOP programmer. If you do not full embrace the concepts of OOP this book is not for you - you will find it difficult and frustrating. To put it another way, if you are a seasoned Delphi programmer who used OOP techniques with high-end windows programming knowledge this book will advance your knowledge greatly. If you are a dabler or a beginner this is not the book for you. The chapters on disk in PDF format where a dissapointment - especially seeing as the choice of chapters seemed quite arbitrary. In summary if you need this book you will probably know about it already. As a professional Delphi programmer, I wouldn't be without it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not for beginners, 22 May 2000
By A Customer
I am relatively new to programming but am quickly becoming a Calvert devotee. When I need to learn about another language or topic, the name Calvert on the cover seems to provide a promise of clear no-nonsense information. The main advantage of this book over other Delphi books is that you can actually READ it as opposed to skimming through. I do not think it is suitable for beginners, but this is not really a criticism - it is not aimed at them. Where I would criticise it is including chapters on the CD - this means of transfer of large amounts of text is not suitable for use by humans. Also, you are expected to go to the website to download extra software to make the examples work, this is poor quality - they should work from the start or not be included (and, presumably, included in the price of the book).
