4.0 out of 5 stars Practical, a good introduction, 5 Oct 1998
By A Customer
Helpful screen-prints of tools. Helpful examples. Good introduction to several subjects: relational database design, SQL, PL/SQL, Developer 2000 (Forms, Reports, Graphics), Procedure Builder, Power Objects, Oracle security, Oracle Database Designer. Very little coverage of SQLplus. Very little coverage of Designer2000, but that is more appropriate for a DBA book rather than a developer book anyway. Ideally, an Oracle developer should also know some of the common utilities -- such as SQLLoader -- which is not covered in this book, nor most other books on Oracle development. I wish this book (or any book!) had a chapter discussing other popular development languages and tools used with Oracle databases -- ideally a comparison of the pros and cons, to assist in decisions about tools and architecture. For example, C or C++ with embedded SQL vs. OCI, vs. JDBC OCI vs. JDBC thin client, Developer 2000 vs. Power Builder, vs. Power Objects, vs. the new "J" tool from Oracle. Which ones provide the fastest development? the best runtime performance speed? Easiest to learn? Trade-offs? Which ones provide best portability to other operating system platforms? Which ones provide best portability from Oracle to other databases such as Sybase or Informix? By the way, I wish I could figure out how to put paragraph breaks into this review.
